Five years after the remarkable success of 'Selina the Football Girl', Annabel is back with its sequel, 'A Court of Her Own'. Once again, proceeds from this new release will benefit the InspiringHK Sports Foundation, an organization dedicated to offering sports training and development opportunities to underprivileged youth in Hong Kong.
Our Bookazine editorial team sat down with writer/ author Annabel, now age 15, to ask her a few questions, as we need to read more stories like Annabel's in Hong Kong , stories from young people that empower other young people to believe in themselves and strive for greatness.
While 'Selina the Football Girl' explored the hurdles Annabel encountered as a young girl with a passion for football, 'A Court of Her Own' deals with the pressures faced by young elite athletes .The story follows twin sisters Amy and Florence as they navigate the high expectations set by their parents and coaches. They find themselves debating whether passion can outweigh talent in sports, and leading them to question the ultimate purpose of their participation in such a high-stakes environment.
Why a second book, we asked Annabel?
"I felt that Selina’s story remained unfinished, and there was more to be told. My new book "A Court of Her Own’ is loosely based on the epilogue from Selina the Football Girl, and it follows the story of her children as she pushes them to be the kind of person - and the kind of player - she once was, in a way living through them because her prime is over."
What books had the most impact on you as a child and why?
"Growing up, I loved reading books, especially the Harry Potter series, these books played a significant role in shaping my love for writing. This magical world, filled with adventure and relatable characters, inspired me to create my very own stories" says Annabel.
Why football? What is it about football or team sport that keeps you going despite the physical challenges, risk of injuries and demanding training and match schedules?
"Football is one of the most popular sports in the world and holds a special place in my heart. Its simplicity allows anyone to play anywhere, making it accessible for all. The thrill of being on the pitch can provide a sense of freedom and joy that is hard to match. Despite the physical challenges and demanding schedules, my love for the game keeps me motivated. The feeling of running through rain and mud with teammates is until today one of my favorite moments on the pitch."
For young girls and boys interested in sports, Annabel's advice is simple yet powerful: just go for it.
The opportunities available today are vast, and hard work can lead to success. Believing in oneself is crucial, as it builds confidence and resilience. Annabel's journey in football and writing demonstrates that pursuing one's dreams requires dedication, but the rewards are worth the effort.
"A Court of Her Own" encourages individuals to embrace their passions and follow their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face. You can buy a copy of Annabel's new book "A Court of Her Own" online or at any Bookazine Stores.
